Friday 28th of September, German duo Mouse on Mars will be performing at Numusic 2012. The duo consisting of Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma has been making electronic music since 1993 and have remained an influential force in the genre through the course of their almost 20 year career. Their album Parastrophics was released in February this year.
For Numusic, St. Wernes encourages the audience to have no expectations for their performance at Tou Scene. - Come with open eyes and ears and we’ll fill it up to the brim. We hope it will be wild of course. We always hope that, he says.
Mouse On Mars' sound links them to the club-music scene, as do their many remixes and collaborations with members of the dance-music world. Having released 12 albums, Mouse on Mars has established themselves as two of the most inventive and unpredictable artists in electronic music. The driving force behind their eclectic sound and collaborations (Stereolab, Mark E. Smith) according to St. Werner, was that Mouse on Mars never intentionally made music to fit a certain genre of music.
- To be honest, we never thought about if we would appeal to anyone. When we started out, we didn’t know who would listen, and we had no idea about clients. We were just producing, and didn’t know if anyone would buy it. Later, it seems we have built a certain reputation, and that people trust us and what we do, not because of a certain style or direction. We make music that is involving. That is the recipe, he says.
Next year, the band celebrates their 20th anniversary, and having been in the game for a long time, the duo still has a way of creating music which continues to remain relevant and appealing. The chemistry between St. Werner and Toma is extraordinary during the production process, challenging each other to push the boundaries beyond what has proved successful in the past.
- If we find the recipe, something that we know will work, we try not to trust it. We find an alternative to it. We will never in a way trust ourselves too much. We try to find new platforms to establish, and to not always do things in the same manner; we try to do things in a different way, St. Werner explains.
